THE ENGINEERING CHALLENGE

Complex Constructability & Coordination Obstacles

The architectural design featured complex curved floor plates and tight ceiling plenums with dense HVAC, hydronic, and electrical distribution runs. Early 2D design drawings exhibited over 1,200 potential spatial interferences between primary structural concrete beams and main mechanical ductwork.

SCOPE OF WORK

Key Engineering Responsibilities

  • LOD 350 Architectural, Structural, and MEP BIM Modeling in Revit
  • Navisworks federated clash detection and trade matrix management
  • Extraction of coordinated builder work penetration drawings
  • Preparation of construction-ready shop drawing documentation
METHODOLOGY

Our Technical Engineering Approach

TechSid deployed a dedicated BIM team utilizing Autodesk Construction Cloud for live worksharing. We established a strict shared coordinate system and parametric family standards, running automated clash rules in Navisworks to categorize clashes into critical (hard structural clashes), medium (clearance issues), and soft (insulation overlaps).

01. Model Authoring

Constructing architectural shell, concrete core, and structural frames in Autodesk Revit per contract drawings.

02. MEP Routing & Federation

Modeling HVAC ductwork, fire protection, and plumbing based on engineering schematics with exact slope and elevation rules.

03. Clash Matrixing

Running weekly Navisworks clash batches, grouping conflicts by floor level, and generating BCF issues.

04. Resolution Workshops

Rerouting secondary services and coordinating beam penetrations with the structural engineer.

05. Sheet Extraction

Extracting clean 2D coordinated shop sheets with elevation callouts and sleeve locations.

Final Deliverables Provided

  • Federated Autodesk Revit Project Model (.RVT)
  • Navisworks Coordination Model (.NWD) with saved viewpoints
  • Builder work opening (BWO) penetration drawing package
  • Clash detection matrix and sign-off report

Project Outcome & Value Delivered

Eliminated all critical spatial clashes prior to on-site construction, preventing costly field rework and enabling seamless trade fabrication.
